Welcome to another edition of Write Wednesday!

In case you aren’t familiar yet, Write Wednesday is a weekly edition on my blog where I share to you the best and trends posts about content marketing, blogging, and freelance writing to help you become better in these fields.

Also, I will be trying to mix up Write Wednesday by sharing to you the latest updates on my blog and freelancing career to help you get to know me better 🙂

  • For new readers, I have been a freelance writing since 2014 and I have built a good living off it. I suggest that you read this post on how I earned my first $1,000 as a freelance writer to get to know me better.

But I assure you that things will pick up soon as I aim to provide you with actionable content about blogging and freelance writing.

Content marketing

2016 hasn’t finished yet and Joe Pullizi of Content Marketing Institute is already talking about the trends for next year. He mentions the importance of a “real content marketing strategy” that encourages marketers to plan, roll out, track, and measure the plan to determine what works and what doesn’t. Another trend that he mentions which I certainly agree is influencer marketing. The ability to build and leverage your connections with the big players in your industry will help you drive more traffic and sales to your online business.

Speaking of traffic, social media is an excellent channel to promote your site or blog to your target audience. Given the saturation of social media pages out there, you need to be creative without breaking the bank. Jason Parks of Entrepreneur lists nine ways on how you can use content to boost your social media engagement, thus bringing in more visitors to your site or blog.

Blogging

I have discussed the importance of writing click-worthy headlines for your articles. By writing the most compelling headline for your posts (without resorting to click-bait and cheap tricks), you can drive more traffic to your site from social media and search results. If my post was not enough for you, here’s a post by Caitlin Burgess at Top Rank Marketing about the do’s and don’ts of crafting clickable headlines. Tips include using numbers, asking questions, being original, and others.

As a writer, creating blog posts day in and out makes you desensitized from what it takes to write an exceptional blog post. In this post by Sam Allcock at Marketing Profs, he identifies what he considers the five elements of an excellent blog post. The elements are parts of what makes his blog post’s skeleton, which helps him become more productive and efficient when writing articles without compromising their quality. If you have been a seasoned blogger, you are aware of tips and tricks on how to create content that people will read. However, the use of different tools to track and measure your blog’s data may cause you to lose sight of the bigger people. After all, at the very heart of blogging is the need to convey thoughts and ideas in a clear and concise manner that is geared towards a specific audience. To enlighten you, here is an excellent post by Tom DeVoto at Marketing Insider Group that brings you back to the basics of effective writing.

Freelance writing

As much as possible, a rule of thumb in writing is to always write in the active voice to create stronger sentences and to communicate your ideas properly. Some would even say to not write in the passive voice because it dampens the message of your article. However, Keith Cronin of Writer Unboxed makes a case for the use of passive voice to balance the article’s tone of voice and make it read more natural.

If you are starting out as a freelance writer, you may be focused on looking for gigs at job boards and referrals. If these aren’t panning out for you, you can leverage social media to bring more attention to your services and attract more clients that way. In this post by Emma Siemasko at Skyword, she discussed how sharing her projects and being comfortable with her skin using social media has gotten her far as a freelancer.

Freelance writing has its perks and disadvantages just like any other job. Working at home as a distinct advantage comes to mind, but there are a lot of factors to consider to decide whether or not freelance writing is for you. Nikki Woods breaks down some of the parts that separate freelancing from other jobs.
